CompositionPsorid 50 Capsule is used to prevent the body from rejecting a transplanted kidney, liver or heart, and to treat severe psoriasis, severe atopic dermatitis and severe rheumatoid arthritis when other treatments have not worked. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing ciclosporin 50mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called calcineurin inhibitors (immunosuppressants).
This medicine is also used for certain kidney conditions, such as nephrotic syndrome. It calms the immune system so it does not attack a transplanted organ or the body's own tissues. Take it at the same times each day, always in the same way with regard to food, exactly as prescribed; do not switch brands without your specialist's advice, as blood levels can change.
Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. Protect your skin from strong sunlight with clothing and sunscreen, as this medicine increases the risk of skin cancer, and keep up good dental hygiene to reduce gum swelling.
This medicine can raise blood pressure and affect the kidneys, so your doctor will check your blood pressure, kidney function and medicine levels regularly. It lowers resistance to infection; avoid live vaccines and report fever or signs of infection promptly. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, an infection or a history of cancer, and about all other medicines, supplements and herbal remedies, as many interact with ciclosporin, including St John's wort. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
