CompositionPTU Tablet is used to treat hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid gland), helping to control symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, a rapid heart rate and anxiety.
It contains propylthiouracil, an antithyroid medicine, which reduces the production of thyroid hormone. Take it as prescribed, and continue treatment for as long as your doctor advises, even once symptoms improve, as stopping early can allow symptoms to return.
Avoiding excess iodine-rich foods such as seaweed and iodised salt, and attending regular thyroid function and blood count checks, support safe treatment alongside this medicine.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have any liver problems, before starting. Report unexplained fever, sore throat, unusual bruising, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes to your doctor immediately.
