CompositionWarf 5 Tablet is used to prevent and treat harmful blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs), and to reduce the risk of stroke in atrial fibrillation. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing warfarin 5mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called oral anticoagulants (vitamin K antagonists).
This medicine is also used to prevent clots in people with mechanical heart valves and certain other heart conditions. It works by reducing the blood's ability to clot. Take it at the same time each day, usually in the evening, exactly as prescribed. Regular INR blood tests are essential to keep your dose right, and your doctor may change your dose often.
Keep the amount of vitamin K-rich foods, such as green leafy vegetables, steady rather than avoiding them, and limit alcohol. Avoid cranberry juice, and do not start herbal remedies or supplements without checking with your doctor.
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy unless your specialist advises, as it can harm an unborn baby. Many medicines, including antibiotics and painkillers such as aspirin and ibuprofen, can change how warfarin works, so tell every doctor, dentist and pharmacist that you take it. Carry your anticoagulant card. Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that will not stop, vomiting of blood or material like coffee grounds, black or tarry stools, red or dark brown urine, coughing up blood, a severe headache, sudden weakness or confusion, or a fall or head injury. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
