CompositionXarelto Tablet is used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in adults with atrial fibrillation not caused by heart valve disease, and to treat and prevent the return of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing rivaroxaban 20mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called direct oral anticoagulants (factor Xa inhibitors).
This medicine works by blocking a key clotting factor in the blood. Unlike warfarin, it does not need regular INR blood tests. Take it once a day with food, which helps the body absorb it, at the same time each day. If you miss a dose, follow the instructions in the leaflet or ask your pharmacist.
Use a soft toothbrush and an electric razor, take care with sharp objects, and avoid activities with a high risk of injury. Carry your anticoagulant card.
This medicine is not suitable for people with mechanical heart valves or certain types of antiphospholipid syndrome. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have active bleeding, a bleeding disorder, severe kidney or liver disease, or a recent stroke, bleed or surgery, and about all other medicines you take, especially other blood thinners, painkillers, and certain antifungals, HIV medicines and epilepsy medicines. Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Tell every doctor and dentist that you take it before any procedure. Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that will not stop, vomiting of blood or material like coffee grounds, black or tarry stools, red or dark brown urine, coughing up blood, a severe headache, sudden weakness or confusion, or a fall or head injury. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
