Albendazole is used for treating a variety of parasitic worm infections.
Albendazole belongs to the category of broad-spectrum antiparasitic medicines.
The medicine binds selectively to a specific site called the beta-tubulin in parasitic worms, thus preventing their growth and multiplication. This action disrupts the metabolism and energy production of the parasitic worms, leading to their immobilization and eventual death. Additionally, Albendazole interferes with an important system within the parasites known as the fumarate reductase system. This further contributes to its activity against these harmful organisms.

Albendazole can be taken orally (tablets and suspensions).
Albendazole is primarily meant for adults. It could also be given to children depending on the type of infection and dose adjustment is considered.
Albendazole is contraindicated in patients who have previously shown hypersensitivity to the medicine or any other benzimidazole derivatives.
It is also not recommended for use in patients with significant liver disease or abnormalities.
Albendazole may interact with anticonvulsants (like phenytoin and carbamazepine), corticosteroids (like dexamethasone), anthelmintics (like praziquantel) and H2 blockers (such as cimetidine).
Overdosing on Albendazole might lead to possible adverse effects like abdominal pain, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, and rash. If you suspect an overdose, it is advised to consult your doctor immediately.
If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as you remember it. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
Most side effects are temporary and generally harmless and resolve when discontinuing this medicine. However, if you experience any severe side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.
Drinking plenty of fluids may help manage some gastrointestinal side effects like abdominal pain and nausea.
Resting and avoiding sudden movements can help manage dizziness or vertigo.
Albendazole may cause dizziness in some patients; if you experience this side effect, it is advised to avoid driving and any activity that requires high levels of alertness or physical coordination.
Albendazole is not recommended for use during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, due to potential risks to the foetus and breastfeeding mothers should avoid Albendazole, as it can pass into breast milk and potentially harm the nursing infant.
Patients with liver disease, bone marrow suppression, or a history of these conditions should exercise caution when using Albendazole.
Regular monitoring of liver function tests and blood counts is advised in these patients.
Regular handwashing, especially before meals, can help prevent some types of worm infections that Albendazole is used to manage.
Keeping your living environment clean and disinfected could also help prevent the spread of parasites.
