Cefixime

ANTIBIOTIC

Uses of Cefixime

  • Cefixime is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections for many different parts of the body, including the ears, nose, and sinuses (e.g., sinusitis), throat (e.g., tonsillitis, pharyngitis), respiratory system (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia), and the urinary tract (e.g., cystitis and kidney infections).

Side effects of Cefixime

  • Diarrhoea
  • Blood in stool
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

How Cefixime works

  • Cefixime is an antibiotic that belongs to the third-generation cephalosporins, similar to ceftriaxone and cefotaxime. It is particularly effective because it remains stable even in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes, which are produced by some bacteria to resist antibiotics like penicillins and certain cephalosporins. Cefixime works by stopping the bacteria from building their cell walls. It does this by binding to specific proteins in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the final steps of cell wall formation. This causes the bacterial cells to burst and die, helped along by the bacteria's own enzymes that break down the cell wall. This ability to interfere with the bacterial cell wall makes cefixime a potent antibiotic against many resistant bacteria.
