How Cefixime works
- Cefixime, an antibiotic classified as a third-generation cephalosporin akin to ceftriaxone and cefotaxime, exhibits robust stability in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes. This stability renders many organisms resistant to penicillins and certain cephalosporins due to beta-lactamases susceptible to cefixime. The antibacterial efficacy of cefixime stems from its ability to inhibit mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall. Like all beta-lactam antibiotics, cefixime binds to designated penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) within the bacterial cell wall. This binding leads to the hindrance of the third and final phase of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Subsequently, cell lysis occurs through the mediation of bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes, including autolysins. It is plausible that cefixime disrupts an autolysin inhibitor in this process.
