Repaglinide

Uses of Repaglinide

  • Repaglinide is primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes in adults. It belongs to a class of medications known as meglitinides that help control blood sugar levels.

Side effects of Repaglinide

  • Hypoglycemia

  • Upper respiratory tract infection

  • Headache

  • Sinusitis

  • Diarrhoea

How Repaglinide works

  • Repaglinide is an antidiabetic medication that falls under the category of meglitinides.

  • It acts by binding and closing the ATP-dependent potassium channels on pancreatic beta cells. This action causes the cell to depolarise, triggering a calcium influx. The influx of calcium stimulates the beta cells to release more insulin into the bloodstream. This insulin then facilitates the uptake of glucose by peripheral tissues and puts a stop to hepatic glucose production, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. The action of Repaglinide is glucose-dependent, which means when blood glucose levels are higher, more insulin is released.
