The primary use of Sevelamer is to lower phosphate levels in the blood of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. It belongs to the class of phosphate binders.
Additionally, it can also be used in CKD patients who are not yet on dialysis to manage high phosphate levels in their blood.

Sevelamer is a phosphate binder.
It contains a polymer substance that is not absorbed into the body. When this medicine is taken with meals, it attaches itself to the phosphate present in the food during digestion. The composite of phosphate and Sevelamer cannot be absorbed and is therefore removed from the body through stool. As a result of this process, less phosphate from the diet enters the bloodstream, gradually lowering blood phosphate levels over continuous use.
