Xylometazoline

Uses of Xylometazoline

  • Xylometazoline is mainly used for providing temporary relief from nasal congestion. This congestion could be due to various conditions, such as the common cold, hay fever, sinusitis, and rhinitis. The medication belongs to the alpha-adrenergic agonists group of medicines.

Side effects of Xylometazoline

  • Temporary burning or stinging in the nose

  • Dryness or discomfort in the nose

  • Sneezing

  • Increased nasal discharge

  • Headache

How Xylometazoline works

  • Xylometazoline is an alpha-adrenergic agonist, which is a type of decongestant.

  • It works by acting on alpha receptors present in the nasal mucosa. When these receptors are activated, they cause the blood vessels to constrict, or narrow down. This reduces the blood flow, thereby reducing swelling and inflammation in the nasal passages. As a result of this constriction, the swollen tissue and mucus membranes shrink, which helps to relieve nasal congestion.
